The Benefits of Tilt-in-Space
Seat tilt or "tilt-in-space" offers many benefits to wheelchair/positioning chair users. Different from back recline, tilt-in-space re-orients the person's body relative to the ground, and the angle of the torso, hips, thighs and calves remain constant relative to each other.

Tilt-in-Space can benefit a variety of users from ambulatory to non-ambulatory:

Pressure and Weight Distribution: By re-orienting the user's body, pressure is redistributed off their ischials for reduced risk of skin breakdown.
Fall Prevention: For ambulatory users, a front pivot tilt-in-space allows a proper foot on floor position for safe propelling without the user leaning forward to reach the floor. This helps maintain mobility and independence. For non ambulatory users, tilt-in-space helps prevent uncontrolled slumping and sliding without the use of restraints.
Inproved Breathing: Some users who lack torso control can often end up sitting with their head towards their lap, which can inhibit breathing. Tilt-in-space helps bring the user's head back creating an ideal head over hips position for improved breathing.
Comfort/Quality of Life: Tilt-in-space changes a user's line of vision as it brings their body back in the chair allowiing them to face forward- ideal for comfort and socializing for improved quality of life.
